KEY POINTS
- Gem Resources’ Gravelotte mine upgrades increased processing capacity by 45%, handling 100 tons daily with no breakdowns in two weeks.
- Active mining began at the Cobra open pit, ensuring steady ore supply for high-quality emerald production.
- Cost-efficient in-house machinery manufacturing cut equipment costs by 75%, bolstering financial discipline and future expansion plans.
Gem Resources, the UK-based mining company, has completed a major overhaul of its Gravelotte emerald mine’s processing plant in South Africa, marking a significant milestone in its operational expansion.
The upgrade, which includes the installation of a state-of-the-art double-deck vibrating screen, is designed to optimize throughput and reduce downtime.
The results have been impressive. Within two weeks of the operation, the refurbished plant boosted its processing capacity by 45 percent, now handling 100 tons of ore per day. Crucially, the plant has operated without any breakdowns, a testament to the durability and efficiency of the improvements.
Strategic shift to active mining and cost-cutting innovations
The operational success of the plant has set the stage for Phase 2 of Gem Resources’ strategy, with active mining now underway at the Cobra open pit. This marks a crucial step in securing a steady and high-quality supply of ore for emerald production, ensuring consistent output moving forward.
The company’s commitment to cost control is evident in its innovative approach to equipment sourcing. By manufacturing much of the necessary machinery in-house and collaborating with local engineering partners, Gem Resources achieved a remarkable 75% reduction in costs compared to purchasing new equipment, including the critical double-deck screen.
Future growth hinges on expansion and quality
Gem Resources’ phased approach balances operational growth with financial discipline. The Company’s in-house manufacturing strategy and the successful ramp-up of the Gravelotte plant position it well for future expansion.
As reported by MiningWeekly, Ed Nealon, Chairperson of Gem Resources, expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, “We are seeing positive results in both mining and processing, with the production line now running smoothly and mining operations at Cobra progressing well. These are key milestones as we move forward.”
Looking ahead, Nealon stressed the importance of ramping up production, enhancing the quality of recovered emeralds, and securing a stable, high-grade ore supply. “These developments will pave the way for further growth and success as we continue to unlock the potential of the Gravelotte mine,” he concluded.
