Trafo Power Solutions is getting more involved in Africa’s mining industry. The business from Johannesburg recently shipped nine custom-made transformers to a mineral sands facility in Mozambique.

The order for Mozambique includes seven 800 kVA transformers on skids that could be moved around the big site and two 160 kVA units on poles. The mine needed voltages between 22 kV and 415 V, thus all of them were rated for that range. The equipment is designed to handle non-linear loads from Variable Speed Drives and maintain working well even when the power supply in the area is not stable.
Mining is a tough job that needs special design
David Claassen, the managing director of Trafo Power Solutions, said that the corrosive and humid conditions of mineral sands mining made it necessary for things to last and be safe. “Our transformers are built to work well even when there is a lot of salt and moisture.” “Claassen further said this makes sure it will work in one of the worst places for a mine to be.”
Trafo delivered the mine four dry-type transformers, three of which could handle 3,150 kVA. They operated well in the corrosive environment. Furthermore this performance helped them get the most recent order.
