KEY POINTS

• Glencore joins VaultCo as a founding partner.
• US EXIM has committed $500 million to the initiative.
• The fund will build strategic stocks of critical minerals.

London-listed mining and commodities company Glencore has been selected by the US government as a founding partner of VaultCo, a new strategic reserve initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s access to critical minerals.

The initiative brings together government financing and private-sector supply capabilities to create strategic inventories of minerals considered important to American industry.

Under the arrangement, Glencore will support VaultCo by sourcing, procuring and delivering critical minerals, helping establish stockpiles that can be drawn on to support industrial demand and reduce exposure to supply disruptions

The Export-Import Bank of the United States, known as EXIM, has committed $500 million in funding to VaultCo.

The financing is expected to provide the initiative with the resources needed to secure supplies and build inventories of critical minerals and base metals.

VaultCo is structured as a public-private partnership, bringing government-backed funding together with Glencore’s global trading and supply capabilities.

The model is intended to strengthen the resilience of US mineral supply chains at a time when governments and industries are placing greater emphasis on securing reliable access to materials needed for manufacturing and other strategic activities.

Glencore to support mineral supplies

Glencore’s role will involve connecting mineral production with US industrial demand through its international sourcing and marketing network.

The company said its participation would build on its established position in linking producers with industrial consumers while supporting more diversified supply chains.

Glencore’s metals and bulk commodities marketing head, Jyothish George, said the company was pleased to partner with EXIM and VaultCo to support critical minerals security and access to materials required by American industry.

VaultCo executive chairperson Brett Lambert said the initiative was designed to ensure that the US industrial base has access to critical minerals needed to manufacture products used by Americans.

The creation of VaultCo comes as governments increasingly focus on the security of mineral supplies needed across industrial and strategic sectors.

Critical minerals are used in a wide range of applications, and disruptions in their availability can expose manufacturers to higher costs, delays and supply shortages.

By combining public financing with private-sector sourcing, VaultCo is intended to create a mechanism through which the US can secure supplies and maintain strategic inventories.

The partnership with Glencore gives the initiative access to a major international commodities producer and marketer, potentially allowing it to source minerals from a range of global markets.

The initiative therefore represents an effort to strengthen the link between mineral production, international trading networks and US industrial consumption, with strategic inventories forming an additional buffer against future supply disruptions.
