KEY POINTS

  • Froydis Cameron-Johansson will succeed Rohitesh Dhawan as ICMM president and CEO.
  • Dhawan will remain in office until the end of 2026 to support the transition.
  • The ICMM will prioritise responsible mining, sustainability and stronger industry standards.

Global mining industry body the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has appointed Froydis Cameron-Johansson as its next president and chief executive officer, succeeding Rohitesh Dhawan, who has led the organisation since April 2021.

The appointment comes as the mining and metals industry faces growing pressure to improve sustainability, strengthen public trust and ensure the responsible production of minerals needed for the global economy.

Cameron-Johansson will take over leadership of the organisation as it begins the next phase of its strategy, with a focus on improving industry performance, promoting responsible mining practices and strengthening standards across mineral and metal supply chains.

Cameron-Johansson brings three decades of experience

According to the ICMM, Cameron-Johansson brings nearly three decades of senior leadership experience across the mining and energy sectors. Her career has included working and living in both emerging and established markets, giving her experience in different operating environments.

The organisation also described her as an advocate for responsible business practices and sustainability, as well as an influential representative of the extractive industries.

Her appointment followed a competitive selection process designed to identify a leader capable of guiding the organisation through the next stage of its development.

One of her key responsibilities will be advancing performance against the Consolidated Mining Standard, which forms part of the industry’s broader efforts to promote responsible mining and improve operational practices.

The ICMM also intends to strengthen its advocacy for responsibly produced minerals and metals, particularly as governments and industries increasingly focus on securing supplies of critical minerals.

Responsible mining takes centre stage

Cameron-Johansson said she was honoured to succeed Dhawan at a time when responsible mining and metals production had become increasingly important.

She noted that the industry’s long-term future would depend not only on the materials it supplies but also on its ability to listen to communities and other stakeholders affected by mining activities.

She said she looked forward to working with the ICMM team, member companies and stakeholders to strengthen public confidence, improve industry performance and demonstrate the benefits of responsible mining.

Her comments reflect the growing importance of environmental, social and governance considerations in the mining sector, particularly as demand rises for minerals used in renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles and other industrial applications.

Mining companies are increasingly expected to demonstrate that their operations meet environmental and social standards while maintaining reliable supplies of the resources needed for economic development.

Dhawan to support leadership transition

Dhawan will remain in office until the end of 2026 to ensure an orderly transition before Cameron-Johansson assumes leadership.

He took over as ICMM president and CEO in April 2021 and said he was proud of the progress made by member companies during his tenure.

According to Dhawan, the organisation’s achievements were driven by the commitment of company chief executives, the work of its staff and collaboration with external partners.

He acknowledged that the mining industry still had considerable work to do but said the ICMM was well positioned to continue promoting responsible practices.

Dhawan expressed confidence that Cameron-Johansson would build on the organisation’s existing achievements and sustain its influence in advancing responsible mining.

ICMM chair welcomes appointment

ICMM chairperson and Antofagasta CEO Iván Arriagada described the appointment as significant for an industry facing growing global attention, particularly over critical minerals.

He said Cameron-Johansson’s experience, knowledge of the sector and commitment to sustainability made her a strong candidate to lead the organisation into its next phase.

Arriagada added that the mining industry needed credible leadership to demonstrate the value of responsibly produced minerals and metals as governments and businesses sought secure supplies.

He also thanked Dhawan for his leadership, crediting him with strengthening the ICMM’s position as a leading industry voice on responsible mining.

Cameron-Johansson’s appointment therefore comes at a pivotal moment for the global mining sector, with expectations rising for companies to balance production, sustainability, community interests and the growing demand for critical minerals.
