A miner identified as Dachung Dacholom has been killed after suspected Fulani militia members opened fire on workers at an illegal mining site in Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, heightening security concerns in the community and prompting troops to intensify patrols around the mining area.
According to security sources cited by counterinsurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama, the attackers opened sporadic gunfire at miners working at the site before fleeing into the surrounding high grounds.
Dacholom was reportedly struck by the gunfire during the attack and died at the scene.
The incident was said to have triggered an immediate security response after troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, deployed in Rim, received reports of gunshots in the area.
Military personnel, accompanied by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), reportedly moved to the mining site to assess the situation and search for the assailants.
Upon arrival, the security team found Dacholom’s body at the scene.
The troops subsequently conducted a search of the surrounding area in an attempt to track down the suspected attackers. However, the operation did not result in contact with the gunmen, who had reportedly escaped into the surrounding high grounds.
Security agencies are continuing efforts to establish the identities of those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
Victim’s Remains Released to Family
Following the security operation, Dacholom’s remains were handed over to his family for burial.
The killing has raised fresh concerns about the security of mining communities in parts of Plateau State, where disputes, criminal activity and attacks by armed groups have periodically threatened residents and workers.
In the aftermath of the attack, troops reportedly increased patrols and security operations around Rim and other vulnerable areas in an effort to prevent further violence.
The increased military presence is also aimed at calming tensions within the community and reassuring residents and miners following the incident.
Security agencies are expected to continue investigations and intelligence-gathering operations to identify and apprehend the suspects.
