  • Petra has appointed Questco to lead its strategic review.
  • The company is assessing options to address liquidity needs.
  • A potential sale of assets is among the options being considered.

London-listed diamond miner Petra Diamonds has appointed Questco Corporate Advisory to oversee a strategic review as the company looks for ways to address its near-term liquidity needs.

Petra, which operates diamond mines in South Africa, announced the strategic review last week as it considers different options for strengthening its financial position and managing its immediate funding requirements.

The appointment of Questco gives Petra an external corporate adviser to help assess the available alternatives and guide the company through the review process.

Asset sales among options being considered

Petra said the strategic review will consider all potential paths available to the business, including measures aimed at improving its liquidity in the near term.

One of the options under consideration is a potential sale of some or all of the company’s assets. The company has not indicated that a sale has been decided, but the possibility will form part of the broader assessment of its strategic alternatives.

The review comes as diamond producers continue to face a challenging market environment, with weaker diamond prices putting pressure on miners and their financial performance.

Petra owns and operates the Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa, known for producing large and high-value diamonds, as well as other assets in the country.

Review could shape Petra’s next steps

The strategic review is expected to help Petra determine the most appropriate way forward as it seeks to address its liquidity position.

Questco will advise the company as it evaluates the different alternatives, including potential transactions involving its mining assets.

The process could ultimately result in asset disposals, although Petra has not committed to any particular outcome. The company said the review would cover all potential options available to address its financial requirements.

Petra’s decision comes at a time when diamond producers are under pressure to protect cash flow and manage balance sheets amid difficult market conditions.

The outcome of the review could therefore have a significant bearing on Petra’s ownership structure, asset portfolio and future strategy.

For now, the company continues to assess its options, with Questco supporting the process as Petra seeks a solution to its near-term liquidity needs.
