KEY POINTS
- 15,000 tonnes of Venezuelan aluminium reached New Orleans.
- The shipment is the first to the US in nearly a decade.
- Heeney plans more shipments and wider Venezuelan investments.
US investment firm Heeney Capital has marked the return of primary aluminium shipments from Venezuela to the United States after an absence of nearly 10 years.
A 15,000-tonne shipment of aluminium arrived and was unloaded at the Port of Avondale in New Orleans, Louisiana, in early October, marking a significant step in efforts to restore trade in the metal between the two countries.
Heeney Capital hosted US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and other officials at the port to commemorate the arrival.
The shipment is being positioned as an early sign of renewed commercial ties between Venezuela and the US, particularly around the supply of materials considered important to American manufacturing.
Heeney targets more shipments
Heeney Capital co-founder Henry Heeney said the company expects the latest shipment to be the first of several deliveries of Venezuelan aluminium to the US.
Heeney said the shipment forms part of a broader initiative involving American investment in Venezuela, with the company looking beyond individual cargoes to potentially support the rebuilding of the country’s industrial capacity.
The aluminium transported to New Orleans is expected to support manufacturing activity in the US, while also helping re-establish a supply route that previously connected Venezuelan producers with American buyers.
Venezuela was once one of the leading aluminium exporters in the Western Hemisphere, making the restoration of shipments potentially important for both countries’ industrial and trade ambitions.
Investment plans extend beyond aluminium
Heeney co-founder Sean Pi said the shipment also carries broader significance for relations between Venezuela and the United States.
According to Pi, the company’s focus is on investments in assets that can support the re-industrialisation of the US. The company sees access to Venezuelan industrial resources as part of that wider strategy.
Heeney Capital expects additional Venezuelan aluminium shipments in the coming months. The company also has a longer-term ambition to increase its investment in Venezuela’s industrial sector.
The planned expansion suggests that the latest shipment could serve as an initial step towards deeper commercial involvement, rather than being a one-off transaction.
The return of Venezuelan aluminium to the US market also comes as American industries seek reliable access to critical raw materials and supply chains. Heeney’s plans could therefore place Venezuela back into a more prominent role in regional aluminium trade if further shipments and investments materialise.
What it means
The 15,000-tonne cargo represents the first primary aluminium shipment from Venezuela to the US in nearly a decade. Heeney Capital expects more shipments and is considering broader investments in Venezuelan industrial capacity.
The company says the initiative could help rebuild a trade corridor that once made Venezuela a major aluminium supplier in the hemisphere while supporting US manufacturing and re-industrialisation efforts.
