Heavy equipment manufacturer SANY has introduced the SRT100S, a 95-tonne-payload rigid dump truck designed to help mining companies lower operating costs while reducing emissions.
The hybrid truck combines conventional power generation with an electric drive system, offering an alternative to traditional diesel-powered mining trucks at a time when fuel and equipment operating costs are putting pressure on mining companies.
SANY sales administration and operations manager Houssein Zhu said the mining industry in Africa is expected to move increasingly towards electric and other lower-emission technologies.
“The future of mining in Africa is definitely going electric,” Zhu said, pointing to growing demand for technologies that can improve efficiency while reducing environmental impacts.
The SRT100S is part of SANY’s wider SRT rigid mining truck range, which covers payload capacities from 55 tonnes to 95 tonnes. Power output across the range varies from 565 kW to 783 kW.
The SRT100S delivers total power of 783 kW and maximum torque of 4,629 Nm. Its electric drive system is one of the key features distinguishing it from conventional rigid dump trucks.
The truck does not rely on a conventional gearbox. Its electric motor can also function as a braking system, helping to reduce reliance on the conventional braking system and potentially lowering component wear.
The combination of conventional power generation and electric drive technology is intended to improve energy efficiency while reducing emissions compared with traditional diesel-driven equipment.
For mining operators, the technology is designed to address two major challenges at the same time: controlling equipment costs and responding to growing pressure to reduce the environmental footprint of mining operations.
SANY has also focused on improving visibility, manoeuvrability and durability in the SRT100S.
The company says the truck’s short-locomotive configuration reduces the blind area by 2 m compared with similar products. A panoramic windscreen and redesigned rear-view mirror arrangement are also intended to give operators better visibility around the machine.
The truck features a large steering angle to improve manoeuvrability, particularly in demanding mine environments. A reinforced articulated bearing has also been incorporated to improve reliability during steering and when the vehicle operates on uneven terrain.
These design features are aimed at helping operators handle the truck more efficiently while reducing the stresses associated with heavy-duty mining conditions.
