The underground drilling industry is on the brink of a significant evolution, with advancements that promise to enhance precision, productivity, and safety through intelligent technology. Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is at the forefront of this revolution, introducing a range of underground drill rigs and bolters equipped with cutting-edge features. This shift towards intelligent drilling, including a keen interest in battery electric models, represents a pivotal moment for the sector.

Khomotso Duiker, Business Line Manager for Underground Drills at Sandvik, highlights the integration of intelligent models such as the Sandvik 400 Series and the Sandvik 300 Series. These advancements are powered by Sandvik’s iSURE® software, which supports automated drilling cycles, showcasing the tangible benefits of intelligent drilling in operations, particularly in diamond mining.

Despite the transformative potential of these technologies, the transition to intelligent drilling presents challenges. Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is dedicated to supporting its customers through this period, providing essential training and support to ensure seamless adoption. The company’s Product Masters and in-house training department are instrumental in introducing these sophisticated machines, emphasizing the importance of understanding automated functions for safety and productivity enhancement.

According to a report by Mining Review, Sandvik’s intelligent drilling rigs, notably the DD422iE model, are designed for electric, automated operations, capable of executing precise drilling plans for optimized blasting. Remote control capabilities further underscore the advancements, allowing for tele-remote drilling operations, and enhancing safety and operational flexibility.

Monitoring equipment performance is crucial in modern mining operations. Sandvik’s Knowledge Boxâ„¢ collects valuable data, aiding in the optimization of work cycles and the drill and blast excavation processes. This data connectivity enables real-time performance tracking and decision-making to improve productivity and uptime.

In line with sustainability goals, Sandvik also supports the recycling of tungsten carbide buttons from drill bits in partnership with Small Medium Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa. This initiative not only fosters entrepreneurship and job creation but also contributes to a circular economy, highlighting Sandvik’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability in mining operations.
