BME’s Global Expansion: Aiming for Sustainability and Innovation

How the blasting and explosives company is tapping into new markets and technologies

by Victor Adetimilehin

BME, a leading provider of blasting and explosives solutions, is pursuing its global expansion plans with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The company, which is part of the Omnia Group, is targeting high-potential markets in Africa, Canada, Australia, and Indonesia.

Growing demand for sustainable fuels

One of the key drivers of BME’s growth is the increasing demand for sustainable fuels, especially in the mining sector. The company has partnered with Hypex Bio, a pioneer in hydrogen peroxide-based emulsions, to offer a greener alternative to conventional explosives.

“Using hydrogen peroxide is a ground-breaking technology in our sector and a direction that we want to help pioneer globally,” said Ralf Hennecke, BME’s managing director. “This partnership also adds considerably to the environmental, social and governance (ESG) conversation which BME has with its mining customers, and opens doors in new and existing markets.”

Hennecke added that BME’s dual-salt emulsions also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the risk of environmental contamination from blasting operations.

Leveraging Digital Tools and Services

Another aspect of BME’s strategy is to leverage digital tools and services to enhance its customer experience and operational efficiency. The company has developed smart functionality for its mobile manufacturing units, using its Xplolog and Xplocharge solutions to enable real-time monitoring, data capture, and analysis.

“Our global expansion is supported by the enabling ecosystem that we provide for customers, to achieve quality blasts which reduce downstream costs while enhancing energy efficiency,” Hennecke said. “This aligns with our customers’ sustainability goals while ensuring optimal productivity.”

The company is also working on the next generation of electronic detonators, and continuing to improve its accuracy and reliability.

Entering New Markets and Segments

BME has been busy building infrastructure and establishing partnerships in its target markets, where it sees opportunities for growth and diversification.

In Canada, the company has set up assembly plants for electronic and non-electric detonators and has been conducting successful trials with its products. It has also built plants in the east and west of Australia and is offering its blasting technology and digital tools to various segments.

In Indonesia, the company has teamed up with leading explosives producers MNK to introduce its solutions to new sectors, such as coal and other minerals and metals. In Africa, the company has been expanding its footprint and exploring new niches, such as underground mining and civil engineering.

“We are excited about these markets as they boast high mineral exploration rates and a diverse range of batteries and other minerals which are important for future growth,” Hennecke said.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic and the economic downturn, BME remains confident in its vision and capabilities. The company has adapted to the changing conditions and customer needs and has maintained its high standards of safety and quality.

“We are proud of our achievements and grateful for the support of our customers, partners, and employees,” Hennecke said. “We look forward to continuing our journey of global expansion, sustainability, and innovation, and delivering value to all our stakeholders.”
