KEY POINTS

  • Nasarawa State says its Endo lithium deal yielded ₦2.6 billion, paid on September 2, 2026, as the first year of a supplementary mining agreement.
  • The state also secured a $1.5 million signature bonus and holds a Federal Government mining licence through Nasarawa Mining Company Limited to guarantee long-term revenue.
  • About ₦800 million, a third of the signature bonus, went to the Endo community for development projects.

Nasarawa State says its lithium mining agreement in Endo has yielded 2.6 billion naira, strengthening the state’s direct financial stake in one of its key mineral resources as it moves to expand mining revenue.

The payment landed on September 2, 2026, representing the first year of a supplementary mining agreement, according to the state government. Moreover, it comes on top of a 1.5 million dollar signature bonus tied to the wider deal, marking a growing revenue stream from the state’s lithium endowment.

A direct stake in mining

Nasarawa has moved to participate in mining itself, not just tax it. Specifically, the government secured a Federal Government mining licence through Nasarawa Mining Company Limited, holding it in the state’s name rather than any individual’s. Consequently, officials say the structure is designed to guarantee long-term revenue for the state rather than private beneficiaries.

That approach reflects a deliberate strategy. Furthermore, by taking equity-style participation through a state-owned vehicle, Nasarawa aims to capture more of the value from lithium, a mineral central to batteries and the global energy transition.

Sharing gains with communities

However, the state has also pledged to share the proceeds. Specifically, one-third of the signature bonus, about 800 million naira, was released to the Endo community for development projects. Therefore, part of the mining income is being channelled directly to host communities rather than kept solely at state level.

Officials framed the community payout as central to the model. Additionally, they said proceeds would finance projects that directly benefit host areas, seeking to build local support for continued mining. Ultimately, Nasarawa is positioning itself as an active player in Nigeria’s critical-minerals push, betting that direct participation and community sharing can turn its lithium into durable revenue and development gains.
