Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (“Harmony”) announces with deep regret a fatality at its Moab Khotsong mine near Orkney, North West province. The incident, which occurred on November 28, 2024, was caused by a fall of ground in one of the mine’s operational areas, according to its voluntary report released on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s SENS platform.
“We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” said Peter Steenkamp, Chief Executive Officer of Harmony. “Our commitment to safety remains unwavering, and we will continue to prioritize proactive measures to mitigate risks and foster a safety-first culture.”
Investigation and area closure
The affected section of the mine has been temporarily closed as authorities and Harmony’s internal safety team conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The company confirmed that all relevant stakeholders, including the employee’s family and regulatory bodies, have been informed.
Mining activities in other sections of Moab Khotsong continue under heightened safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of all workers.
Focus on safety
Harmony, one of South Africa’s leading gold producers, has consistently emphasized the importance of workplace safety across its operations. Despite ongoing efforts to enhance its safety measures, the mining industry remains inherently hazardous, particularly in deep-level mines like Moab Khotsong.
The company has reiterated its commitment to reducing incidents through robust safety initiatives, training programs, and continuous monitoring of underground conditions. “This tragedy reminds us of the critical importance of maintaining vigilance and adhering to safety protocols at all times,” added Steenkamp.
Recent safety record
Moab Khotsong is a key operation for Harmony, producing a significant portion of the company’s annual gold output. However, the mine’s depth and complex geological conditions pose challenges, making safety a constant priority.
The incident marks a somber moment for Harmony, which has made strides in improving safety performance over recent years. The company remains committed to achieving zero harm by integrating advanced technologies and reinforcing safety as a core operational value.
Support for the family and employees
Harmony is providing support to the deceased employee’s family, including counseling services and assistance through the company’s compensation program. Colleagues of the late employee are also receiving psychological support as part of Harmony’s care and wellness initiative.
“Our thoughts are with the family and everyone impacted by this loss. We will continue to work towards a safer environment for all our employees,” Steenkamp concluded.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in the mining sector and serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safety in protecting workers’ lives.
