KEY POINTS

  • Trump unveils a $15bn Iowa steel project.
  • Plant could produce 10 million tons of steel yearly.
  • Project expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans for a $15 billion steel project in Iowa, with the development expected to become one of the largest integrated steel operations in the country.

The project is being developed by Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota-based company that recently opened the state’s first new iron-ore mine in 50 years. The planned facility will use iron ore from the company’s Minnesota mine to produce steel in Iowa.

The first phase of the Iowa project is expected to produce about 7.5 million tons of steel a year. Production could eventually rise to 10 million tons annually, which the White House described as potentially the largest steel plant in US history.

Construction is expected to begin ahead of the planned start of steel production in 2030.

The project will be vertically integrated, linking Mesabi Metallics’ iron-ore mining operations in Nashwauk, Minnesota, with steel production in Iowa.

Mesabi is owned by Indian conglomerate Essar Group, which has invested more than $2.5 billion in the Minnesota mine.

Earlier in September, the US Export-Import Bank announced plans to provide $10 billion in financing for expansion of the Minnesota mine. The bank’s chairman, John Jovanovic, also visited the project site.

Thousands of jobs expected

The Iowa steel plant is expected to create at least 1,750 permanent jobs once operational. Construction of the first phase could support as many as 6,000 jobs.

The White House estimates that the first phase could generate about $95 billion in economic impact during construction and its first 10 years of operation.

The project is also expected to benefit from relatively lower commercial electricity prices in Iowa compared with Minnesota, an important consideration for steelmaking, which requires large amounts of power.

Project tied to US manufacturing push

Trump presented the investment as evidence of a revival in US manufacturing and the domestic steel industry.

The announcement comes as the administration continues to promote tariffs and other measures aimed at encouraging companies to produce more goods in the United States.

US steel prices have remained elevated partly because of trade restrictions, increasing the attractiveness of domestic production even as high construction costs present challenges.

Trump imposed a 25% tariff on most imported steel during his first term, and former President Joe Biden largely retained the measure.

The US steel industry is also dealing with wider global challenges, including excess production capacity, particularly in China, and weak demand in some markets.

The Mesabi project therefore represents a major proposed expansion at a time when steel producers are balancing higher domestic prices with challenging global market conditions.

The company has not yet provided a detailed explanation for its decision to locate the steel mill in Iowa while sourcing iron ore from Minnesota, which is about 250 miles from the Iowa border. First steel production is currently targeted for 2030.
