KEY POINTS

  • Generation Mining secured $140m from Canada’s Growth Fund.
  • Marathon targets 532m lb of copper and 2.1m oz of palladium.
  • Funding moves the Ontario project closer to construction.

Canadian emerging copper and palladium producer Generation Mining has secured about $140 million in investment from the Canada Growth Fund as it works to advance its Marathon project in Ontario toward a final investment decision and eventual construction.

The investment provides a major funding boost for the TSX Venture Exchange-listed company and is designed to help unlock additional private capital for the development of the critical minerals project.

The Canada Growth Fund, or CGF, is providing the financing through two instruments. It will invest $90 million in common shares as part of Generation Mining’s broader $200 million equity financing.

The fund will also provide $50 million through a convertible note investment, forming part of a separate $100 million convertible notes offering.

The financing structure is expected to strengthen Generation Mining’s balance sheet as it moves the Marathon project through the development process and seeks to secure the capital needed for construction.

The Marathon project, located in Northwestern Ontario, is being developed as a major source of copper and palladium in Canada.

Generation Mining expects the project to produce substantial quantities of several critical and precious metals over its planned 13-year operating life.

According to the company, the project is expected to produce about 2.1 million ounces of palladium and 532 million pounds of copper during its lifetime.

It is also projected to produce approximately 488,000 ounces of platinum, 160,000 ounces of gold and three million ounces of silver.

The combination of copper and palladium gives the project strategic importance as Canada and its North American partners seek to expand domestic supplies of minerals used across industrial, energy and technology applications.

Canada seeks stronger critical mineral supply chains

The Canada Growth Fund said its investment is intended to help strategically important Canadian critical mineral projects attract the private capital required to move into development.

By anchoring Generation Mining’s equity financing, the fund is also expected to help the company access committed lending facilities and other sources of funding.

The federal investment comes as Canada seeks to increase domestic production and processing of critical minerals and reduce reliance on external supply chains.

Canadian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said advancing the Marathon project would help strengthen North American copper and palladium supply chains while supporting employment in Northwestern Ontario.

The project is also expected to contribute to Canada’s broader efforts to develop mineral resources needed to support its economy over the long term.

Generation Mining’s latest financing represents an important step toward the company’s goal of taking Marathon to a final investment decision.

A final investment decision would determine whether the project proceeds into full construction based on its economics, financing arrangements, development requirements and market conditions.

The additional capital could therefore help Generation Mining complete the work needed to move Marathon from its current development stage toward construction.
