Canadian gold and silver developer Discovery Mining has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of veteran mining executive William Shaver as a director and Ewan Downie as adviser to the company’s president, CEO and chairperson.
The appointments are aimed at supporting Discovery’s expansion strategy as the company advances its growth plans across Canada and Mexico.
Shaver joins Discovery’s board with more than 60 years of experience spanning mining management, construction, operations and mine design.
He co-founded Dynatec Corporation in 1980, helping build the company into one of North America’s leading mining contracting and operating groups.
Before joining Discovery, Shaver served as chief operating officer of McEwen Mining, adding extensive senior-level operational experience to the company’s leadership structure.
Downie Adds Exploration and Corporate Experience
Downie brings more than three decades of experience in the exploration and mining industry, with a track record of founding, developing and leading mining companies.
He founded i-80 Gold Corporation and served as its CEO until 2024. He also founded Premier Gold Mines and led the company until its acquisition by Equinox Gold in 2021.
Earlier in his career, Downie founded the original Wolfden Resources and served as its CEO from 1995 to 2007. The company was subsequently acquired by Zinifex.
Alongside the new appointments, Discovery has reorganised its operational leadership by dividing the chief operating officer responsibilities between Duncan King and Gord Leavoy.
King, the company’s former senior vice-president of Canadian operations, will share the COO responsibilities with Leavoy, who previously served as senior vice-president of mineral processing.
The restructuring is intended to bring greater depth of operational and technical expertise to Discovery as it pursues its development and growth objectives.
Discovery president, CEO and chairperson Tony Makuch said Shaver and Downie would bring significant mining expertise and experience to the company.
According to Makuch, their combined skills will contribute to Discovery’s future growth as it advances its plans in Canada and Mexico.
The appointments come as the company seeks to strengthen its management and governance capabilities while positioning itself for further expansion in the gold and silver sector.
