- Resumed mining can create jobs and attract foreign investments.
- Robust regulations ensure environmental and social sustainability.
The recent lifting of the five-year ban on mining activities in Zamfara State is being hailed as a significant step toward economic growth and diversification.
According to the Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF), this decision by the Federal Government aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of inclusive development and sustainable resource management.
Mining resumption opens economic opportunities
The mining ban, imposed in 2019 due to escalating insecurity linked to illegal mining, curbed some immediate threats but also led to challenges like unregulated exploitation and lost national revenue.
With the ban lifted, the focus shifts to harnessing Zamfara’s abundant mineral deposits, including gold, lithium, and copper, for the benefit of the nation.
“Zamfara’s mineral wealth offers Nigeria a golden opportunity to generate revenue, create jobs, and attract foreign investments,” said Ahmad Sajoh, chairman of the TSF.
According to News Diary Online, the resumption of mining is expected to stimulate infrastructure development, revitalizing Zamfara’s local economy while aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for nationwide economic growth.
Success in tackling insecurity paves the way
The Federal Government’s strategic efforts to restore security in Zamfara have been a critical factor in lifting the mining ban.
Through intelligence-driven military operations, notorious bandit leaders, including Halilu Sububu, have been neutralized.
“This demonstrates the administration’s resolve to safeguard lives and properties while promoting economic activities,” Sajoh noted.
The success in addressing security concerns highlights the importance of coordinated efforts between military and local authorities in creating a safe environment for mining operations to thrive.
Regulations ensure sustainability and local community welfare
With mining activities set to resume, stakeholders emphasize the need for robust regulations to ensure sustainability and equity. Sajoh stressed that environmental protection and the welfare of local communities must be prioritized.
“Mining operations should actively involve local communities and uphold best practices to guarantee sustainable development,” he said.
The TSF also called on stakeholders to collaborate with the government to combat misinformation and support reforms in the sector. By promoting transparency and best practices, the mining sector can reclaim its role as a key contributor to Nigeria’s prosperity.
“This is a new chapter in Zamfara’s mining history, and together, we can ensure it translates into tangible benefits for Nigerians,” Sajoh added.
