The Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) apprehended 23 individuals, including a minor, involved in illegal mining operations in Agusan del Sur.

The arrests were made on December 27 during a joint operation by regional forces, local police, and representatives from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) at Barangay San Andres, Bunawan.

Arrests uncover explosives and mining equipment

Acting PNP-CIDG Director General Nicolas Torre III revealed that the suspects were apprehended following confirmed intelligence reports of illegal mining activities in the area.

Authorities seized an array of equipment, including 35 sacks of gold-bearing rock materials, a percussion hammer, an electric drill, and cellophane-wrapped ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO).

Improvised explosives, electric detonators, blasting caps, and other tools were also confiscated during the raid.

“The operation was conducted to dismantle illegal mining operations that not only harm the environment but also violate existing laws under Republic Act No. 7942, the Philippine Mining Act of 1995,” Torre said.

Charges filed against suspects

The 23 suspects are now in the custody of the Bunawan Municipal Police Station, with charges for violating the Philippine Mining Act being prepared.

According to MSN, authorities confirmed that the minor among the suspects has been handed over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

An ongoing investigation aims to trace the financiers and operators behind these unlawful activities.

“This is just the beginning. We are committed to identifying and holding accountable those at the top of this illegal operation,” Torre added.

Community impact and environmental concerns

Illegal mining remains a critical concern in the Philippines, with operations often linked to environmental degradation and community displacement.

The PNP-CIDG continues to work with various agencies to curb such activities and ensure compliance with national laws.

This operation highlights the government’s commitment to preserving natural resources and upholding environmental laws, as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of communities affected by illegal mining.
