Collaborative Efforts Needed for Economic Growth, Says Minerals Council

by Adenike Adeodun

The Minerals Council South Africa urges a collaborative relationship among government, labor, civil society, and the private sector to address the country’s numerous challenges. As political parties discuss forming a government of national unity, the council emphasizes the need for trust and cooperation.

For over a year, the government and business groups, including the Minerals Council, have been working together to tackle energy, rail, road, port, crime, and corruption crises. This partnership is making a positive impact, according to the council.

“If South Africa is to fully realize its minerals potential and compete for critical minerals, it needs a modern, efficient, and conducive operating and regulatory environment,” said Minerals Council CEO Mzila Mthenjane. He added that a competitive and growing mining industry benefits all of South Africa’s society.

The council acknowledges the African National Congress’ call for multi-party and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This approach aims not only to resolve South Africa’s problems but also to seize investment and economic development opportunities in the mining industry and other sectors.

Mthenjane stressed the importance of a government that prioritizes the Constitution. “A government that places the Constitution at the forefront of collaborative efforts to grow an inclusive economy and opportunities for all South Africans is a favorable outcome,” he said.

The Minerals Council shares values that will underpin a new government. These include nation-building, social cohesion, respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, social justice and equity, human dignity, non-racialism, and non-sexism.

The council also emphasizes the importance of stability, accountability, transparency, integrity, community participation, and good governance. These principles are essential for addressing South Africa’s challenges and creating a better future.

The Minerals Council highlights the significant role of the mining sector in South Africa’s economy. It advocates for a regulatory environment that attracts investment and supports sustainable growth. By working together, stakeholders can create a more prosperous and equitable society.

This collaborative approach is vital for South Africa to achieve its economic and social goals. The council believes that partnership and mutual trust among all sectors are crucial for overcoming current challenges and seizing future opportunities.
