In a surprising discovery, Mount Erebus, a colossal volcano in Antarctica, is erupting microscopic gold particles. Researchers estimate the daily emission to be around 80 grams, worth nearly $6,000. The gold dust travels hundreds of miles from the volcano, but the harsh environment makes commercial extraction impractical. Scientists are instead focusing on the phenomenon to study Earth’s mantle composition and element movement within volcanoes.
