Coal miner Seriti Resources’ Seriti Power Community Trust has launched the Monyetla Free WiFi project, which will provide more than 500 households in the Phola community with free, unlimited internet access. The project, implemented by Ikeja Wireless, will also create WiFi hotspots throughout the community, enabling easy and free internet connectivity.
The project was developed in close consultation with the Phola community. Members were encouraged to sign up to host a hotspot at their homes. This initiative will provide free internet for each specific household and play a vital role in offering digital access to neighbors and friends.
The community has shown overwhelming support, with over 8,000 individuals pre-registering to host hotspots before the project’s launch. The initial 500 households will be the first to enjoy seamless internet access when the network goes live.
“We are very proud to improve the lives of the Phola community by providing unlimited access to information, education materials, online services, social media platforms, and entertainment. This will open a world of opportunities,” said Seriti CEO Mike Teke. “We ask the community to take care of this infrastructure so the plans we put in place today will continue to benefit people well into the future,” he added.
This project is part of the first phase of the Seriti Power WiFi initiative, which will also be expanded to Klarinet, Khutala, and KwaGuqa. Seriti has committed to spending R151 million on this project over three years.
“The benefits of this project will have a direct positive impact on the lives of all Phola community members for a long time to come,” said Ikeja Wireless founder and CEO Peter Coetzee.
Meanwhile, the Seriti Power Community Trust also handed over the R545 Phola intersection project. This project involved pavement repairs and upgrades, clearing walkways, creating road markings, and ensuring pedestrian safety. Additionally, it included the installation of 23 new bus shelters, 16 new solar-powered high-mast lights, and repairs to 47 existing municipality electrical high-mast lights, all valued at R32 million.
The comprehensive approach taken by Seriti Resources showcases their commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and connectivity. The Monyetla Free WiFi project stands as a testament to the potential for corporate-community collaboration to bring significant, lasting benefits.
In addition to internet access, the infrastructure improvements at the R545 Phola intersection aim to enhance safety and convenience for residents. These developments are expected to foster a more connected and secure community environment.
Seriti Resources’ efforts exemplify a growing trend of using technology to bridge digital divides in underserved communities. By prioritizing connectivity and infrastructure, Seriti is establishing a model for other companies to follow in promoting sustainable development.
