Botswana Minerals Gets Approval to Begin Copper Exploration

KEY POINTS

  • Botswana Minerals receives environmental approval for two copper licences.

  • AI and soil sampling will help identify priority drilling targets.

  • The company will fund the sampling programme from existing cash.

Botswana Minerals has secured environmental authorisation to begin fieldwork on two copper exploration licences in Ngamiland, north-west Botswana, advancing its efforts to identify promising drilling targets.

The London Stock Exchange-listed company plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) alongside geological, geochemical and geophysical data to guide its exploration programme and identify areas with the strongest potential for copper mineralisation.

The authorisation allows the company to proceed with planned field activities as it works towards selecting locations for future drilling.

AI-driven programme advances exploration

Botswana Minerals is using an AI-driven exploration programme to analyse historical geological information and identify potential copper deposits across its two licences.

The company has been reviewing historical drill core samples and gathering additional geological and geophysical information to narrow down the areas considered most promising for further investigation.

Chairperson John Teeling said the work had helped the company focus on what it believes could be its strongest drilling targets.

He added that the company was making progress towards defining drill sites, with the next phase expected to provide more information to support its exploration decisions.

Using AI to analyse geological datasets can help exploration companies identify patterns and prioritise targets for further investigation. However, the results of field sampling and subsequent drilling will be needed to determine whether commercially viable copper deposits are present.

Soil sampling to help identify drilling targets

The company plans to begin targeted soil sampling as the next stage of its exploration programme.

Results from the sampling exercise will be integrated with historical drill core information, geochemical data and geophysical findings to develop a more detailed understanding of the licences.

The combined analysis will help Botswana Minerals refine and rank targets in the northern parts of the exploration areas before deciding where drilling should take place.

Soil sampling can help identify geochemical anomalies that may indicate underlying mineralisation. When combined with other geological evidence, the results can help exploration teams narrow their search and focus resources on areas with greater potential.

The planned work is therefore intended to improve the selection of drilling locations before the company commits to the next stage of exploration.

Company to fund work from existing cash

Botswana Minerals said the soil sampling programme would be financed using its existing cash resources.

Funding the next phase from available cash would allow the company to proceed with the planned work without announcing a separate funding arrangement for the programme.

The immediate focus remains on collecting and analysing additional exploration data, improving the ranking of potential targets and defining suitable drilling locations.

The environmental authorisation marks progress in the company’s exploration plans, but further technical work will be required before the presence, scale or commercial viability of any copper deposits can be established.
