Glencore Coal has invested R18.6 million in a new fire station in Ferrobank, Kwa-Guqa, South Africa, handing the facility over to the eMalahleni Local Municipality to strengthen emergency response and improve community safety.
The new facility is expected to bring emergency services closer to residents of Kwa-Guqa and surrounding communities, allowing firefighters and other emergency personnel to respond more quickly to household fires, veld fires and other emergencies.
The investment comes as communities in the coal-mining region continue to require stronger emergency infrastructure to protect lives, homes, businesses and the environment.
Construction of the fire station began in 2024 and has now been completed with a range of facilities designed to support the day-to-day operations of emergency personnel.
The development includes a main fire house, wash bay, drill tower, generator room, compressor and equipment storeroom. It also has dedicated parking areas, while the entire site has been paved and securely fenced.
Glencore Coal’s General Manager for Community and Regulatory Affairs, Noel Pillay, said the project was conceived to improve access to emergency services and reduce response times.
He said the completion of the facility fulfilled the company’s objective of placing emergency services closer to the community and improving their ability to save lives.
Pillay also stressed that uncontrolled fires can have serious consequences for households, businesses, communities and the surrounding environment, making reliable emergency services an important part of community resilience.
Project Creates Local Jobs
Beyond providing new emergency infrastructure, the project also generated economic opportunities for residents of the municipality.
Glencore appointed Ruby’s & Olwethu Projects, a contractor based within the eMalahleni Local Municipality, to deliver the development.
The project created 28 employment opportunities for local community members, including eight women, 20 men and nine young people.
The employment opportunities provided income for local residents while also supporting skills development and strengthening the capacity of local contractors.
Ruby’s & Olwethu Projects CEO Samuel Maswanganne welcomed the opportunity to work with Glencore on the project and described the development as an important partnership with the mining company.
The new fire station will become part of the eMalahleni Local Municipality’s existing emergency services network, adding capacity to operations in Kwa-Guqa and neighbouring communities.
Acting Executive Mayor of eMalahleni Local Municipality, Thembi Tshabalala, welcomed the facility and highlighted the demanding conditions faced by firefighters.
She stressed the importance of providing emergency personnel with suitable infrastructure and resources to enable them to respond effectively when communities are affected by fires and other emergencies.
The fire station forms part of Glencore Coal’s broader community investment activities in areas surrounding its mining operations.
The project demonstrates how mining-sector investments can support essential public infrastructure while also creating local economic opportunities.
For Kwa-Guqa residents, the completed facility is expected to improve access to emergency services and strengthen the municipality’s ability to respond to incidents. For Glencore, the project represents an effort to work with local authorities and communities to address critical infrastructure needs.
