Seriti Resources Group Chief Executive Officer Mike Teke has been appointed chairman of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Coal (FutureCoal), effective Aug. 12, 2025.
He succeeds July Ndlovu, who retired after leading the organisation through a period of transformation and rising industry activism.
Teke, who previously chaired FutureCoal’s Southern Africa Chapter, played a central role in developing its Sustainable Coal Stewardship (SCS) framework , a decade-long, technology-led plan to modernise operations, attract responsible investment, and also deliver both economic and environmental benefits.
FutureCoal’s leadership shift
Furthermore in a video statement, Teke described the appointment as an honour and emphasised the need for global unity amid mounting energy and supply security challenges.
“Our mission at FutureCoal is to define a future where coal is understood as a strategic resource necessary to alleviate poverty and underpin modern living,” moreover he said. “It’s time to stop being silent supporters, stop apologising, and start leading.”
Sustainable coal stewardship at the centre
Teke positioned the SCS framework as a practical solution, not a theoretical vision. The initiative brings policymakers, financiers, and industry stakeholders together to ensure coal is used responsibly across industries.
He further urged investors, producers, and policymakers to embrace a unified approach in transforming coal’s role, ensuring it continues contributing to the global economy in a responsible way.
Tribute to July Ndlovu’s tenure
With paying tribute to his predecessor, Teke praised Ndlovu for reshaping FutureCoal into a forward-looking alliance. Ndlovu also expressed confidence in Teke’s leadership, alongside CEO Michelle Manook, to strengthen the organisation’s influence.
Teke’s career spans top leadership roles in mining and corporate governance, from founding Optimum Coal to also serving as president of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. Finally he currently chairs Masimong Group Holdings and several boards, bringing extensive industry and leadership experience to his new role.
