De Beers Group and Angola’s state diamond company, Endiama, have hit a milestone in their exploration partnership with the discovery of kimberlite the rock that hosts diamonds in Angola.

The find, made in July 2025 in the first drill hole into a high-priority cluster, marks the first new kimberlite field identified by De Beers in more than three decades. The targets were pinpointed from airborne surveys conducted earlier this year.

Over the next few months, the joint venture will conduct further drilling, ground geophysical surveys, and lab tests to determine the type of kimberlite and its diamond potential.

Partnership built on long-term agreements

The venture builds on two Mineral Investment Contracts signed between De Beers and Angola’s government in April 2022, and a 2024 memorandum signed at the Mining Indaba. The agreements further cement a commitment to unlock Angola’s diamond resources responsibly.

Angola touted as prime exploration ground

Angola is one of the best places on the planet to look for diamonds,” De Beers CEO Al Cook said. He credited the Lourenco administration for adopting international standards, improving transparency, and also fostering a business-friendly climate that encouraged the company’s return.
