Minerals Council Extends Condolences on Passing of Pravin Gordhan

Former minister and SARS commissioner remembered for integrity and dedication

The Minerals Council South Africa has extended its sympathies to Pravin Gordhan’s family, friends, and colleagues on his passing. 

The former Minister of Public Enterprises and Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (Sars), died on September 13 at the age of 75, following a lengthy illness. 

According to a report by Mining Review Africa, Pravin Gordhan served in several key positions in the South African government, including Minister of Finance (2009-2014, 2015-2017) and Commissioner of SARS (1999-2009), where he was recognized for his integrity, anti-corruption efforts.

He also focused on stabilizing key state-owned entities and modernizing the country’s tax system.

The CEO of Minerals Council, Mzila Mthenjane, said, “Our thoughts are with Gordhan’s family at this difficult time, as well as his friends and colleagues in government and the private sector.”

National logistics crisis committee initiative under Gordhan’s oversight  

The Minerals Council had lengthy discussions with Gordhan on Transnet during his time as Minister of Public Enterprises from 2018 to 2024 when he oversaw state entities such as Transnet and Eskom. 

These discussions with Gordhan, and the board of Transnet have laid the framework for the National Logistics Crisis Committee to stabilize Transnet Freight Rail’s services and eventually return them to name-plate capacity. His service in government exemplified a person of principle and courage.

Pravin Gordhan served as the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service from 1999 to 2009. He chaired the Convention for a Democratic South Africa and the Transitional Executive Council. He held several key government roles, including Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises until he retired in 2024.
