Sovereign Metals’ Pilot Phase Progresses at Kasiya Project in Malawi

by Adenike Adeodun

ASX- and Aim-listed Sovereign Metals announced that construction for the pilot mining and land rehabilitation program at the Kasiya rutile/graphite project is on schedule. The groundwork is underway, demonstrating significant progress.

“This pilot phase marks a step-change for Kasiya, showcasing our execution capabilities in Malawi. Early works are progressing as planned – on schedule and within budget,” said Managing Director Frank Eagar. “We are pleased with the progress, especially the mobile fleet’s performance in the soft saprolite ore, confirming our understanding of the simple mining process, which requires no drilling or blasting, contributing to low operating costs.”

The construction fleet is on site, consisting of four excavators, 20 trucks, two bulldozers, and a motor grader. They are currently moving 5,000 cubic meters of earth per day to excavate a water storage pond and build test areas. A perimeter fence around the 9.9-hectare pilot site ensures compliance with health and safety standards.

Sovereign’s strategic investor, Rio Tinto, assists in establishing and implementing health and safety protocols daily. Eight water extraction boreholes have been commissioned, delivering water to the site, with the water storage pond soon to be filled. The pond, currently being excavated, will be sealed using natural clay from the excavated material, minimizing the use of conventional plastic lining and aligning with Sovereign’s sustainability objectives for Kasiya.

Key contractors and consultants across major disciplines essential for the pilot phase have also been appointed. This phase is an educational opportunity for project stakeholders, with Sovereign planning stakeholder visits and consultations.

Sovereign emphasizes its commitment to restoring mined land to achieve the same or better agricultural yields than current land uses. The pilot phase aims to demonstrate successful land rehabilitation to local communities, forming a crucial component of the ongoing optimization study. Results will help determine optimal excavation and backfill approaches, providing critical information for the upcoming definitive feasibility study.

Eagar added, “The progress at the pilot phase is encouraging. We look forward to demonstrating our capability to the local communities and stakeholders. Our goal is not just successful mining but also ensuring the land is returned to its original or better state, supporting local agriculture.”

Sovereign’s initiative highlights a sustainable approach to mining, aiming to balance economic benefits with environmental responsibility. The Kasiya project is set to become a benchmark for future mining projects in the region, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and sustainable practices.

The pilot phase at Kasiya is a critical milestone for Sovereign Metals, showcasing their commitment to sustainable and efficient mining practices. With the support of strategic partners and a clear focus on land rehabilitation, the project aims to deliver significant benefits to the local community and the broader economy.
